On Wednesday, Taiwan’s president welcomed Washington House Speaker Nancy Pelosi in a defiant manner despite an enraged China preparing military drills scarily close to the island’s coastline in retribution for the visit.
Despite repeated, stern concerns from Beijing, which regards the island as its own and had stated that it would view Pelosi’s visit as a serious provocation, Pelosi arrived in Taiwan on Tuesday.
China promptly reacted by issuing a warning of “very serious consequences” to the US ambassador in Beijing and by announcing military exercises near Taiwan.”Despite purposefully increased military threats, Taiwan would not yield. At an event with Pelosi in Taipei, Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen declared, “We will… continue holding the layer of protection for democracy.”
She also expressed her gratitude to Pelosi for “taking actual steps to demonstrate your steadfast solidarity for Taiwan at this crucial time.”
China opposes nations having diplomatic exchanges with Taipei and works to make Taiwan secluded on the international scene.
The most prominent elected US official to travel Taiwan in the previous 25 years is Pelosi, who is second in line for the presidency.
She stated at the ceremony with Tsai, “Today, our delegation came to Taiwan to make unambiguously clear we would not forsake our commitment to Taiwan.
Pelosi had earlier said that her delegation had arrived “in friendship to Taiwan” and “in peace to the region.”
