NEW YORK: In light of the immense hardship endured by Kashmiris and as a danger to regional and global peace and security, Kashmir’s festering conflict needed to be resolved, according to Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Munir Akram, on Wednesday.
Munir Akram said in a statement marking Kashmir Martyrs’ Day that from the start of the Kashmiris’ fight for the legitimate right to self-determination that had been granted to them by Security Council resolutions, over 100,000 Kashmiris had been martyred by Indian occupation troops. He stated that the 22 Kashmiris who have been killed on July 13 by the Maharaja’s Dogra Forces inside the grounds of Srinagar Central Jail were remembered on this day every year by Pakistanis and Kashmiris worldwide.
He claimed that the cruel repression of the Kashmiri people has persisted even after 91 years.Munir Akram claimed that after its illegitimate and unilateral actions on August 5, 2019, India had escalated its oppressive campaign.
He mentioned that thousands of Kashmiri youth had been jailed, hundreds had died in phoney encounters, and more had vanished or been extrajudicially murdered while in custody.
He emphasised that Kashmiri leaders are still detained while essential human rights, such as the freedom of assembly and expression, are still being restricted.
