PHNOM PENH (Cambodia): Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov (left) shakes hands with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi during talks on the sidelines of the East Asia meeting on Friday.—AFP

PHONM PENH: Tensions over developments in Taiwan spilled into an Asian conference of foreign ministers on Friday, taking attention away from efforts to end the Myanmar situation.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov exited a plenary session as Japan’s top diplomat, Yoshimasa Hayashi, was speaking.

Wang later held a rare press conference, accusing Blinken of disseminating disinformation.

He described Pelosi’s visit as a “contemptible farce,” emphasising that China’s military reaction was “strong, robust, and appropriate,” and done professionally.
When asked about Hayashi’s walkout, Wang speculated that he’d had a guilt complex.

“Why are you concerned about this if you have done nothing wrong to China?”

As he talked, Hayashi observed Wang and Lavrov departing.

“When things are tense, it’s critical to communicate effectively.” “Japan is always willing to engage in talks with China,”The 10-member Asean published a declaration on Friday which made no mention of Taiwan, but expressed concern with Myanmar’s military rulers’ slow progress in implementing an Asean-led peace accord.
