Islamabad: Shahbaz Gill’s two-day physical detention was authorised by an Islamabad district & sessions court on Wednesday at the request of the capital police.
A decision that was reserved earlier today was made public by additional District of Sessions Judge Zeba Chaudhry.According to the court decision, Muhammad Shahbaz Shabbir Gill must spend the next 48 hours in the detention of the investigating officer.
The investigating officer was also told by the judge to have the respondent evaluated by a doctor and provide a report to the court.According to the PTI, if Gill is sent to the Islamabad police, who previously mistreated him while he was in their custody, he will likely face additional abuse.
On August 9, shortly after making debatable comments on television that now the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) regarded to be “extremely hostile and seditious,” Gill was detained by the Islamabad police.
Less than a week ago, a court denied a police request to prolong Gill’s two-day physical remand, and a second district and sessions judge declined a plea calling for a review of the district court’s judgement. Now, Gill has been remanded to Islamabad police custody. On Saturday of last week, Islamabad Senior Advocate Jahangir Khan Jadoon submitted a petition before the Islamabad High Court contesting these decisions.
The authorities had argued in the petition that it is crucial for the conclusion of the case’s investigation that Gill remain physically detained while he is being held in judicial custody on allegations of sedition for inciting mutiny in the armed services as a result of his contentious remarks.
