ISLAMABAD: On Tuesday, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman was found not guilty in the Toshakhana (gift repository) case by the Islamabad High Court (IHC).
The decision on a challenge brought by the former premier challenging a trial court’s ruling that the criminal case brought by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) was admissible was announced by IHC Chief Justice Aamer Farooq.
The plea was submitted after the PTI leader was charged on May 10. Two days after the Toshakhana case’s criminal prosecution was halted by the high court.
On May 5, Islamabad’s Additional Sessions Judge Humayun Dilawar declared that the PTI chairman would face charges in the Toshakhana case on May 10.
The former PM’s attorney presented two arguments during the hearing, arguing that the ECP’s petition was “non-maintainable” and that the sessions court had jurisdiction to hear the case.
The judge, however, denied both requests and called the PTI leader into court for the indictment.
During court proceedings held at the guest house of the Police Lines headquarters at H-11 on May 10, Judge Humayun Dilawar indicted him.
The Commissioner’s Office has granted the Police Lines court status for security concerns. He refused to sign the documents when the court indicted him in the Toshakhana case while maintaining that he had committed a crime.
