ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced on Tuesday that during the current fiscal year, the government will impose a targeted subsidy on vital products such as wheat, sugar, edible oil, lentils, and rice.
Shazia Marri, Minister for Poverty Alleviation and Social Protection and Chairperson of the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP), said that delivering relief to eligible populations was a key government priority.
In conjunction with the Ministries of Finance and Trade and Commerce, the prime minister authorised the Ministry of Poverty Alleviation to develop a comprehensive strategy for a targeted subsidy.
He urged the relevant agencies to ensure that underprivileged people receive targeted subsidies.
PM Sharif was briefed on BISP’s ongoing projects by Shazia Marri.
The meeting also touched on the country’s political predicament.
