The controversies plaguing the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) show no sign of subsiding as letters purportedly written by the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) to the Indian High Commission emerged in which the party asked the mission to raise its voice to safeguard human rights particularly in Karachi where Rangers are currently conducting an operation.
In one of the letters which was apparently drafted by Nasreen Jalil of the party’s central co-ordination committee, the party has stressed on the lawlessness of law enforcement agencies and has requested the Indian High Commission to use its offices to improve the situation of urban Sindh. The letter reads ‘The targeted operation in Karachi was initiated to bring law and order in the city but since then, 40 MQM workers have been killed in custody, 90 party workers are missing while hundreds are killed in target killings.’
MQM’s Parliamentary leader Dr. Farooq Sattar in a press conference claimed that no letter has been written to the Indian High Commissioner regarding the arrest of party activists. However he added that if any letter has been sent to the Indian High Commission it can be a technical error. MQM leader Waseem Akhtar however contradicted Sattar’s claims that the letter was a technical mistake and said that it is normal practice to routinely send letters to all consulate generals, the prime minister of Pakistan and chief justice of Pakistan whenever party activists are arrested.
The letters controversy is just the continuation of controversies the party has been involved in, MQM chief Altaf Hussain has faced immense criticism over the last few months because of his tirade against the law enforcing agencies. The self exiled MQM chief recently also appealed to India to raise voice for the party on International forums.
MQM has so far failed miserably to put a lid to the continued controversies the party finds itself in.
