Washington: John Bolton, a former US ambassador to the UN and national security advisor in the White House, admitted on Tuesday that he has assisted in the planning of failed coups in other nations.
Following each day’s congressional hearing regarding the attack on the US Capitol on January 6, 2021, Bolton spoke to CNN. The members of the panel charged former President Donald Trump on Tuesday with encouraging the riots in an effort to hold onto power following losing the 2020 election.
Bolton, however, asserted in a conversation with CNN anchor Jake Tapper that Trump lacked the skills necessary to pull off a “meticulously planned coup d’etat,” he continued, later stating: “As someone who has helped arrange coups d’etats — not around here but you know (in) those certain places — it takes hard work. And he (Trump) didn’t act in that way.”
Tapper enquired as to which attempts Bolton was makingBolton remarked, “I’m not going to delve into the specifics,” before bringing up Venezuela. “It didn’t work out well in the end. It isn’t that we had more to do with it, but I witnessed what it takes for the opposition to attempt and unseat a president who had been chosen illegally, and they failed “said he.
As national security adviser in 2019, Bolton officially backed Juan Guaido’s request for the military to support his drive to depose socialist President Nicolas Maduro, asserting that Maduro’s reelection was invalid. Maduro eventually remained in charge.
