KABUL: Days before first anniversary of a Taliban’s return to power, Taliban fighters forcefully disrupted a rare gathering in the Afghan capital on Saturday by beating women protestors and firing into the air.
The Taliban have reversed the slight advancements gained by women throughout the two decades of US operations in Afghanistan since taking power on August 15 of last year.
About 40 women marched in front of the education ministry office in Kabul while chanting “food, labour, and freedom,” but the fighters scattered them by shooting their weapons into the air.
Taliban gunmen followed and clubbed some female demonstrators using their rifle butts after they sought safety in adjacent stores.
The marchers sought the right to employment and political involvement while carrying a banner that said, “August 15 is a dark day.”
A call for justice. Many of them were not wearing facial coverings as they yelled, “We’re tired of ignorance.
One of the march’s organisers, Zholia Parsi, lamented that the Taliban from intelligence service had arrived and opened fire.
They scattered the girls, tore our banners, and took several of the girls’ cellphones.
Munisa Mubariz, a demonstrator, swore to carry on the struggle for women’s rights.
