NEW DELHI: The Commonwealth Games javelin champion from India, Neeraj Chopra, will not defend his title in Birmingham owing to an injury, the nation’s Olympic organization announced on Tuesday, two days before the opening ceremony.
During the weekend’s World Athletics Championships in Oregon, when Chopra, 24, earned silver, he sustained an injury.The Indian Olympic Association did not specify the nature of the injury, but after finishing second to Anderson Peters of Grenada, he complained of “thigh soreness.”At the upcoming Commonwealth Games, which get underway on Thursday, Chopra was the defending champion.
Chopra had called me earlier today from the US to inform me that he will be unable to compete in the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games due to fitness issues, according to a statement from Rajeev Mehta, secretary general of the Indian Olympic Association. His medical staff has advised him to take a month off from work and other activities after he underwent an MRI scan on Monday.
