Several fans claimed on Twitter that other fans had racially harassed them at the Birmingham venue on Monday.
Azeem Rafiq, a former Yorkshire spinner, tweeted a thread describing some of the instances and said it was “disappointing to read.”Rafiq’s statement to a British parliamentary committee last year sparked an inquiry into Yorkshire’s alleged institutional racism and produced significant changes.
In response to Rafiq’s message, Edgbaston’s official Twitter account promised to look into the situation right away.In a statement, the England & Wales Cricket Board expressed its “great worry” about the reports.
“I’m devastated by these reports as we’re working hard to make Edgbaston a secure, inviting place for all,” said Stuart Cain, chief executive of Edgbaston, on Monday.
I personally met with the man who posted the original tweets after seeing them, and we are now engaging with the area’s stewards to determine what transpired.
