Afreen Fatima, a 22-year-old Indian Muslim activist, lost her home in Uttar Pradesh on Sunday — not due to a natural calamity, but due to state authorities’ directives.
Since it came to power in 2014, India’s BJP-led government has been pursuing Muslims. However, things have reached a new low, first when two prominent BJP spokespersons’ blasphemous and hateful rhetoric was exposed, and then when the BJP chose to retaliate against Muslims who protested such hate speech.
When police opened fire in Jharkhand, two adolescents died as a result of bullet wounds. More than 300 people were arrested in Uttar Pradesh alone, which is run by Yogi Adityanath, who is thought to be just as terrible as Modi when it comes to persecuting Muslim minority. Yogi, a Hindu fanatic, has ordered the demolition of three Muslim-owned homes.
One of them belonged to Afreen Fatima’s father, Javed Mohammad, who was wrongly accused by the Uttar Pradesh police of being one of the major conspirators in the June 10 riots in Prayagraj.
Despite the fact that there is no rule in the Indian constitution or penal code that permits the demolition of homes as a form of punishment, Javed Muhammad’s home was purportedly demolished on the grounds that it was an illegal structure.
According to his family and lawyers, this is all part of India’s ongoing anti-Muslim campaign.
Modi’s India has cracked down on Muslims peacefully protesting in India, but it was quick to notice a Muslim-led commercial and financial boycott, labelling the offending spokespersons as “fringe elements.” That would be putting it mildly.
These so-called fringe elements are to blame for the loud playing of genocidal songs at anti-Muslim rallies in India. As a result of these so-called fringe elements, Muslim businesses are being targeted as beef lynchings occur. Meanwhile, the Indian judiciary remains a mute observer to all of this.
The truth is that India has become a nightmare for Muslims who reside there, and the BJP’s anti-Muslim crusade is only getting worse.
People residing in Indian-controlled Jammu and Kashmir are subjected to everyday abuse, as well as efforts to alter the state’s demographic realities.
Pakistan has been speaking out against Indian oppression of Kashmiris as well as the targeting of Indian Muslims in India, but other Muslim countries and the West must also begin speaking out against the BJP’s ruthless dictatorship.
It is clear that BJP activists and allied groups have been given carte blanche to discriminate against Muslims.
That ‘Shining India’ that was previously held up as an example of tolerance to all of South Asia has plainly vanished, if it ever existed.
The fact that India has devolved into a fascist state is not news, but the world’s indifference to this state-sanctioned hatred should terrify everyone. The lack of UN and international action in response to the situation is extremely concerning, and it must be addressed before more attacks on those who have done nothing wrong but speak out against hate speech and violence.
