Instant messaging application WhatsApp is testing a new feature for its users, which will make it easier to remember the birthdays of friends and family.

According to reports, a new Contacts tab is in the works in the iOS version of the messaging app, where users can be shown birthday reminders for their saved contacts.

The feature is currently in the testing phase but is likely to be rolled out to Android users in the future.

WhatsApp’s new navigation design is replacing the existing Updates tab with a Contacts tab, while Status Updates and Channels are expected to be moved to the Chats section.

WhatsApp will likely use the birthday information already saved in the user’s phone’s Contacts app for birthday reminders, which means users will not need to create a separate birthday list in WhatsApp.

If a protected contact has a birthday, the Contacts tab may display a cake emoji and the message ‘Birthday Today’ next to the person’s name. This reminder is expected to be prominent throughout the day so that users can wish their friend or loved one a happy birthday in a timely manner.

This feature is currently in beta and WhatsApp has not announced its official availability or final form.
