The Punjab government has prepared a major plan to save billions of rupees, under which the local production of electric buses will be started in the province. According to sources, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has given final approval to this project.
Under this project, electric bus manufacturer Heavy Industries Taxila (HIT) has started preparations to set up its production unit in Taxila. Starting local production will not only significantly reduce costs but will also create technology transfer and employment opportunities.
According to sources, the Punjab government is currently paying about $220,000 for an electric bus, but after local production, the cost will come down to about $150,000, which will save billions of rupees.
The Punjab government has already announced to operate 1,500 electric buses in ten districts of the province, and this new initiative is being described as an important step towards environmental improvement, fuel saving and a modern transport system.
