Seven people were shot on a vehicle carrying Jewish worshipers in Jerusalem’s Old City on Sunday, according to Israeli police and witnesses.
The shooter eventually surrendered to Israeli authorities, the police said in a statement that did not name him. According to Israeli media, the attacker was a Palestinian from east Jerusalem.
The Old City is one of the localities where Palestinians desire statehood and is home to places of worship for Muslims, Christians, and Jews.
Israel claims that all of Jerusalem is its capital, a claim that is not accepted by other countries.Jews were leaving rituals at the Western Wall that marked the end of the Sabbath when the attack occurred in the early hours of Sunday.
Prime Minister Yair Lapid declared in a statement that Israeli security personnel would “establish calm” and noted that Jerusalem is both their capital city and a popular tourist destination for people of all faiths.
