Government documents show that the current federal government collected a record Rs 3,137 billion in levies, the burden of which was borne by citizens in the prices of petroleum products.

At the beginning of the government on March 4, 2024, the price of one liter of high-speed diesel was Rs 287.33 paise, which reached Rs 520.35 paise, while the price of one liter of petrol was Rs 279.75 paise, which reached Rs 458.41 paise for the first time in the country’s history.

Based on official documents, the federal government collected Rs 1,567 billion in petroleum levy in the financial year 2025-26, in addition to this, more than Rs 50 billion was collected separately in the form of carbon levy on petrol and diesel.

In the fiscal year 2024-25, Rs 1,220 billion was collected as levy, while in the April-June quarter of 2024, the levy collection was Rs 299.63 billion.

Currently, a petroleum levy of Rs 80 is levied on one liter of petrol and diesel, while a climate support levy of Rs 5 is also being collected separately.
