LAHORE : Polling is underway for the Senate by-election on a vacant seat in the Punjab Assembly. Voting began at 9:00 AM and will continue until 4:00 PM, with four candidates contesting the seat.From the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), Hafiz Abdul Karim is in the race, while Meher Abdul Sattar is representing Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). Khadija Siddiqi and Ijaz Minhas are contesting as independent candidates.
It is worth mentioning that the seat became vacant following the death of Professor Sajid Mir, the Ameer of Markazi Jamiat Ahl-e-Hadees Pakistan.
To win, a candidate requires 185 votes. The ruling coalition reportedly commands the support of 261 members, while the opposition holds 108 votes.Chief Whip Rana Arshad has been appointed as polling agent by the PML-N, while Rana Shehbaz is serving as polling agent for the opposition.
The Punjab Assembly comprises 371 seats, of which two are currently vacant. A total of 369 members are eligible to vote in this election.
According to party positions:• PML-N holds 229 seats• PPP has 16• PML-Q holds 11• PML-Zia has 1• PTI commands 27 votes• Sunni Ittehad Council holds 76• TLP and MWM have one vote each• Istehkam-e-Pakistan Party (IPP) holds 7 votes.
