PESHAWAR: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa police has witnessed a continuous decrease in the incidents of terrorism this year as compared to the corresponding period of last four years.
During the current year, 113 incidents took place as compared to 240 in 2014, 245 in 2013 and 170 in the year 2012. There has also been a decrease in terrorism related casualties and injuries in the current year as compared to the corresponding period of the year 2014, 2013 and 2012. In the current year, 77 persons were killed and 133 were injured as compared to 213 killed and 547 injured in the year 2014, 317 killed and 848 injured in the year 2013, and 116 killed and 422 injured in the year 2012, a report released by the Police here on Wednesday.
The analysis has shown in the current year, 44 incidents of IED blasts occurred as compared to 120 incidents in the year 2014, 165 incidents in the year 2013, and 108 incidents in the year 2012. There were 03 incidents of VBIED and Suicide bombing in the year 2015 as compared to 10 in year 2014, 15 in year 2013, and 12 incidents in the year 2012. Similarly, the rocket and missile attacks remained the lowest during the current year as compared to the last three years. In 2015, there 04 incidents, in 2014 there were 11 incidents, in 2013, 08 incidents and in 2012 15 incidents occurred. The hand grenade/ target killing incidents showed a decline in the current year as well. There were 62 incidents in the current year as compared to 99 incidents in the year 2014. Peshawar, D.I.Khan, Bannu and Hangu Districts remained the most badly affected area by terrorism.
The Inspector General of Police KP, Mr. Nasir Khan Durrani, appreciated the performance of Counter Terrorism Department and lauded the efforts of the entire team in successfully tracing 60 cases of terrorism during this month. These cases included attack on Imami mosque Peshawar, attack on wagha border Lahore, attack on Bashir Ahmed bilor, attack on district court Peshawar, bomb blast at Khyber bazaar, suicide attack on judicial complex, hand grenades and target killing of police officials, attack on NATO terminal, Bomb blast at chowk yadgar Peshawar, bomb blast at super market Peshawar and others. The Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) deals with all the incidents of terrorism. The CTD has successfully arrested 23 proclaimed offenders with head money on their arrest.
During the Local Body Elections due to the hectic efforts of the KP Police and CTD, no incidents of terrorism occurred all across the province despite credible intelligence in the form of call intercepts regarding carrying out subversive activities to disrupt these local body elections. This intelligence included attacks on Polling stations, and other sensitive installations as well as targeting of local political leaderships.
However, due to the strategy of the KP Police and CTD, all such subversive activities were averted well before time. The extensive search and strike operations that were carried out all over the province one month before the elections were part of the strategy to ensure that no incidents of terrorism took place. During these Search and Strike Operations in District Peshawar, huge amount of explosives along with prima cords and ball bearings were recovered. In District Lakki Marwat huge cache of rockets, missiles and explosives were recovered from a school that was selected as a Polling station. In Mansera district, suicide jackets, prima cords explosives and ball bearings were recovered and militants arrested who were wanted in the cases of attack on police and polio team. A total of 9073 search and strike operations were conducted during this current year.
