Karachi prepares for flooding and heavy rains.

KARACHI : Under the influence of a potent monsoon system that has moved into southeastern Sindh from the neighboring Indian state of Rajasthan, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) predicted moderate to heavy rains in Karachi this afternoon or evening. The Met Office issued a warning that till Tuesday evening, heavy rains could result in urban floods in Karachi, Hyderabad, Thatta, Badin, Khuzdar, Ormara, Pasni, and Gwadar. The PMD had initially predicted rain and thunderstorms for Karachi on Saturday evening, but because of shifting meteorological patterns, those chances have since disappeared. However, according to PMD authorities, Sunday's very heavy rains in Balochistan and Sindh might potentially result in an "urban flooding-like situation" in Karachi and other lower Sindh cities.

A powerful monsoon system from the Bay of Bengal has moved into southeast Sindh, and in the next 24 hours, it may receive some assistance from the Arabian Sea. Between July 3 and 5, this system is predicted to bring heavy to very heavy rainfall to the districts of Tharparkar, Tharparker, Umerkot, Sanghar, Badin, and Mirpurkhas, Thatta, Hyderabad, Tando M. Khan, Tando Allayar, Karachi, Dadu, and Jamshoro.

According to officials, between 100 and 150 millimeters of rain could flood low-lying areas, cause urban floods, interfere with the electricity grid, and result in other problems including severe traffic jams on city streets.
