The Uruguayan football team faced another unusual situation after its World Cup exit, with the team’s charter flight cancelled and players now flying back home on separate commercial flights.
According to media reports, the Uruguayan Football Association has cancelled a charter flight booked to return the team from its base camp in Mexico to the capital Montevideo. The decision means the national squad will fly home on separate commercial flights instead of travelling together.
Uruguay needed a win against Spain in their final group stage match. However, the team had been struggling after drawing their previous two matches against Saudi Arabia and Cape Verde.
Spain took the lead in the crucial match played in Guadalajara in the 42nd minute of the first half, capitalising on a goalkeeper’s mistake. Uruguay’s team could not overcome this deficit throughout the match and was eliminated from the tournament after a 1-0 defeat.
Uruguay, a South American country with a population of about 3.5 million, is considered a country with a strong tradition in world football. However, this time the team could not advance beyond the group stage.
