Islamabad: The Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (Pims) will conduct another medical examination on PTI leader Shahbaz Gill, according to a Friday order from an Islamabad district and sessions court.
The court issued the orders after suspending until Monday Gill’s transfer to police for the duration of his two-day physical remand, which had been approved on Wednesday. The court then determined that the remand period began this morning when the PTI leader was turned over to police by hospital staff.
Earlier today, Gill, who was detained in relation to a FIR filed against him for allegedly instigating a mutiny among the military personnel, appeared before Judicial Magistrate Raja Farrukh Ali Khan.He was transferred to Pims late on Wednesday night after complaining of respiratory issues amid claims that he had been tortured while in police detention, and from there, he was transported to court in an ambulance.
Video from outside the courthouse showed people swarming around Gill, who entered in a wheelchair and seemed to be having trouble breathing.Gill could be seen pleading for his “mask” in a video posted by the PTI’s official Twitter account as he was being led into the courtroom. The scene was called “heartbreaking” in the tweet. The court considered whether Gill’s Wednesday-approved two-day remand had expired when it issued its ruling.
The court noted that the investigating officer (IO) had asked the Pims management for authorization to undertake an investigation at the facility, but that authorization had been denied.
It was noted in the court judgement that if the IO’s request had been granted, “it may have been deemed that the term of physical custody started from of the point so when doctor granted authorization for [the investigation].”
