ISLAMABAD: The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) is likely to be given the power to scrutinize and investigate government employees who have assets in excess of their legitimate income. According to a private TV, the government has decided to modernize the system for monitoring the assets of government officials, under which unusual wealth and suspicious assets will be identified with the help of artificial intelligence (AI).

Briefing the Senate Standing Committee on Finance and Revenue, the Secretary Establishment Division and other senior officials said that the FBR will be empowered to scrutinize and investigate government employees whose assets exceed their legitimate income.

According to officials, the AI-based monitoring system will issue “red flag” alerts on unusual increases in the financial records and assets of government officers, after which the FBR will be able to initiate an investigation.

Federal Secretary Establishment Division Nabil Awan told the committee that from December 2026, the assets and financial details of all government officers from Grade 17 to Grade 22 will be made publicly available through a new digital declaration system. This system is being developed in consultation with the FBR.

Under the proposed policy, officers will also have to disclose their family members’ assets, foreign trips and other financial details.

The briefing stated that senior officials, including the FBR Chairman and Member Inland Revenue, will have the authority to initiate immediate investigations into suspicious financial transactions revealed through AI.
