The summit of member states at the UN headquarters in New York will be hosted by France and Saudi Arabia today, in which 6 countries will officially announce the recognition of the Palestinian state.
According to the international news agency, the aim of this meeting of world leaders is to gain global support for the two-state solution. In which France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Malta, San Marino and Andorra will officially recognize Palestine as a state.
It should be noted that previously the UK, Canada, Portugal and Australia have also announced their recognition of Palestine as a state.
Israel and the US have announced a boycott of the meeting, while Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas will also not be able to attend because the US refused to grant him a visa.
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas will address the meeting via video link. Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman will also ensure his participation in the meeting via video.
Israeli Ambassador to the UN Danny Danon called the conference a “circus” and said that it is tantamount to rewarding terrorism.
Similarly, the US State Department has dismissed Western countries’ announcements of recognition of a Palestinian state as “mere showy acts” and said that our priority is Israel’s security, the release of hostages, and lasting peace in the region.
Western countries say that this is a critical time and that if urgent steps are not taken, the two-state solution could be buried forever.
