Abid Ahmad (50), the unlucky container driver, is fighting for his life at Lady Reading Hospital (LRH) after being identified as having acute pneumonia and respiratory infections brought on by COVID-19 and air pollution.
Abid was on a ventilator for about 35 days at the Pulmonology ward of LRH after his condition deteriorated in a private hospital. Doctors were working to save his life.”Abid was in critical condition.
According to Dr. Anila Basit, Associated Professor, Pulmonology Department LRH, “We put him on a ventilator when his oxygen level drastically dropped due to acute pneumonia and worsened asthma paired with symptoms of air pollution and COVID-19.”
She claimed that because of his weakened immune system and the extensive damage to both of his lungs caused by air pollution and pneumonia, he was vulnerable to the corona.
The senior pulmonologist described air pollution as a serious threat to human life, adding that it could affect people of all ages, particularly children and the elderly. He also noted that pollution reduced children’s lung growth and function in addition to causing respiratory chest infections, lung cancer, coronary heart disease, strokes, and asthma, all of which frequently result in early deaths if left untreated.
Along with a lower IQ and severe respiratory illnesses in children, air pollution was the main factor in stillbirths and premature deliveries. To raise the air quality index, I recommended people to wear face masks and use safe energy sources.
Dr. Anila cited the WHO report 2021 when stating that excessive hazardous gas emissions, primarily from industrial facilities, brick kilns, vehicle traffic, and other sources of air pollution, result in the deaths of almost seven million people annually worldwide.
