The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) has released its annual review of the payment system for the fiscal year 2025-2026, according to which transactions worth Rs 673 trillion were made through banking channels. Pakistan Politics
According to a State Bank spokesperson, 14.3 billion retail transactions worth Rs 673 trillion were made through formal banking channels in the fiscal year 2026, while the volume of retail payments recorded a year-on-year increase of 58 percent and the value recorded a 10 percent increase.
According to the State Bank, out of the 14.3 billion retail transactions, 13.2 billion were made through digital channels, with a 65 percent increase in digital retail transactions recorded a year-on-year increase.
According to the State Bank spokesperson, the share of digital channels in total retail transactions increased from 88 percent to 92 percent, while more than 11.1 billion transactions were made through mobile phone-based financial services, an increase of 79 percent.
According to the State Bank spokesperson, 0.3 billion transactions were made through internet banking portals, an increase of 15 percent year-on-year, the POS network expanded to 337,791 terminals at 295,367 merchant locations.
According to the State Bank, about 1.5 million card payments were made daily through POS, compared to one million payments per day in the last fiscal year, the share of account-based online payments through banking channels in e-commerce transactions increased to 96 percent, while the number of branchless banking mobile app users reached 99.1 million.
According to the State Bank, the number of mobile app users of banks has reached 30.4 million, Prism Plus was introduced in August 2025, the RTGS system was migrated to the ISO 20022 standard, while Prism Plus will help improve the efficiency, transparency, and security of retail and large-value payments.
