LAHORE: The World Day against Human Trafficking is being observed today (Wednesday) across the globe, including in Pakistan, to raise awareness about the fight against human trafficking, bring perpetrators to justice, and protect millions who fall victim to this crime due to deception, coercion, or desperation. The day holds particular significance for Pakistan, where illegal migration to Europe has become alarmingly common. Human traffickers lure young people with promises of employment and a secure future, pushing them onto perilous journeys that often end in tragedy.
In recent years, hundreds of Pakistani youth have drowned while attempting to reach Europe through illegal sea routes.
Experts stress that the government must go beyond rhetoric and fully implement the Smuggling of Migrants Act 2018, alongside raising public awareness about the dangers of illegal migration.Citizens, particularly young people, are urged to thoroughly verify all employment offers abroad and stay vigilant against traffickers. Until collective responsibility is exercised, human trafficking will continue to claim innocent lives.
