Gut health can affect everything from mood to immunity, but a new study has found that gut health may also be the cause of our poor sleep.
Researchers have linked insomnia to different types of gut bacteria, while insomnia itself is related to the abundance of specific ‘bugs’ in the gut.
According to the UK’s National Health Service, insomnia can also be caused by anxiety, noise, alcohol, caffeine or shift work.
Several studies have looked at the effects of the gut microbiome on various aspects of sleep, but it is not yet clear how different groups of gut bacteria may affect the risk of insomnia.
In the study, published in the Journal of General Psychiatry, researchers used data from 386,533 people with insomnia who participated in a previous study.
