Joe Root scored an unbeaten 67 to rebuild England's innings after Indian debutant Akash Deep took three wickets to put the tourists in early trouble in the fourth Test on Friday.
England, fighting for a 2-1 lead in the five-match series, struggled to 198-5 at tea after electing to bat first in Ranchi.
Former captain Root and wicketkeeper-batsman Ben Foakes scored 86 off 28 to thwart the Indian attack in the second session.
Root scored his first fifty of the series after scoring just 77 runs in the last six innings and facing criticism for reverse-scooping his wicket in the third match of the loss.
