In the Sunday Times, Manchester United great Wayne Rooney thinks that manager Erik ten Hag can increase his chances of earning his first Premier League point vs Liverpool on Monday if he benched Cristiano Ronaldo and Marcus Rashford.
Brighton scored their first ever victory at Old Trafford, and United’s season has started with humiliating losses. Last weekend, Brentford crushed United 4-0.
For the first time in thirty years, they are now firmly established at the bottom of the Premier League.United will play host to a Liverpool team looking for their first victory of the season after two draws at Fulham & Crystal Palace.
United and England’s all-time leading scorer Rooney claims that his previous team needs players that give everything on the field, yet neither Ronaldo nor Rashford do that.
Ronaldo, who is currently on his second stint at United, is rumoured to be looking to leave the team in order to play Champions League football.
Rashford has lost his spot in the England team due to a decline in form since participating in the Euro 2020 final last year, and there have been rumours linking him to French champions Paris Saint-Germain.
Ronaldo should be allowed to depart, according to Rooney, who is currently the head coach of DC United in the MLS, as at 37 he is not a player to base a possible championship squad around.
Rooney added, “He has also made it known that he wants to quit the club.
I don’t know why, but as I said in my previous column, I’d let him. He’s a terrific player and will always score goals, but Ten Hag needs to build a club that can contend for the championship in three to four years.
