Muzaffaraba: Following the demise of President of Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Barrister Sultan محمود Chaudhry, on January 31, 2026, a public survey conducted by a daily newspaper regarding the upcoming presidential election in Azad Jammu and Kashmir indicates a growing trend: a majority of citizens wish to see a personality in the state’s highest office who possesses practical experience in international diplomacy, global law, and human rights affairs.
The survey included opinions from lawyers, teachers, students, traders, civil society representatives, and individuals belonging to various schools of thought. According to the findings, in the context of the evolving global political environment and new alignments in South Asia, the head of the state should not be confined to a merely symbolic role but should provide active diplomatic and courageous leadership.
A significant number of participants emphasized that the President of Azad Jammu and Kashmir should be someone well-versed in international treaties, diplomatic protocols, global human rights systems, and the procedures of international courts, so that the state’s position can be presented effectively and convincingly at global forums.
Respondents stated that limiting the presidential office to internal political balance or party affiliation would be against the state’s interests. Public circles demanded that competence, integrity, global vision, and diplomatic expertise should be the primary criteria in selecting the candidate.
The survey also revealed that a dignified and non-controversial diplomatic personality could create better access and opportunities for serious dialogue in global capitals on behalf of the state. Several participants pointed out that in the modern era, diplomacy is no longer limited to traditional meetings; the ability to shape narratives through digital platforms, think tanks, international media, and policy forums has become essential.
According to them, a president with strong international connections could highlight the Kashmir issue more effectively on the global stage, particularly in the context of human rights and the right to self-determination.
Business and academic circles included in the survey expressed the view that promoting a positive international image could enhance not only political standing but also economic and educational opportunities. They noted that stronger ties with international institutions could increase prospects for development projects, academic exchanges, and humanitarian assistance.
Overall, the survey report indicates that the public views the presidential election not merely as a constitutional appointment, but as a crucial stage in shaping the state’s strategic direction. A considerable number of citizens appear to favor the selection of an experienced and dignified diplomatic personality as a more suitable choice for safeguarding the interests of Azad Jammu and Kashmir and ensuring effective representation at the international level.
