ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif today spoke on the telephone with the President of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Dr. Masoud Peshmerga. It should be noted that this is the second contact between the two leaders in a week.
According to a statement issued by the Prime Minister, the conversation between the two leaders lasted for more than an hour, during which the two leaders discussed in detail the ongoing tensions in the region and efforts for peace.
The Prime Minister reiterated his strong condemnation of Israel’s continued attacks on Iran, especially the recent attacks on civilian installations yesterday.
He expressed Pakistan’s full solidarity and support for the Iranian people in these difficult circumstances. The Prime Minister expressed deep sorrow and grief over the loss of more than 1900 precious lives and prayed for the deceased and the speedy recovery of the injured.
The Prime Minister briefed the Iranian President about the ongoing diplomatic contacts between himself, Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar and Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir with the United States, brotherly Gulf and Islamic countries, which are aimed at creating a conducive environment for peace talks.
He expressed his strong support for Pakistan’s peace initiative and expressed hope that collective efforts would lead to an effective way to de-escalate tensions.
The Iranian President appreciated the Prime Minister’s sincere diplomatic efforts and expressed his position on Israeli actions against Iran. He stressed the need for confidence-building for negotiations and mediation and praised Pakistan’s positive role in this regard.
The Prime Minister thanked the Iranian President and assured that Pakistan would continue its constructive role for promoting peace and stability in the region.
