KABUL: Gunmen invaded a Sikh gurdwara in Afghanistan’s capital on Saturday, killing at least one Sikh and wounded seven others, according to the interior ministry.
The terrorists tossed at least one grenade inside the temple complex, setting out a fire, according to Ministry spokesman Abdul Nafi Takor.
A car bomb was detonated in the neighborhood minutes later, but no one was injured, he added.
“One of our Sikh brothers was killed in the attack, and seven others were injured,” Takor stated in a statement.
Two assailants and one Taliban fighter were killed in an effort to secure the temple after the raid, he claimed.
Gurnam Singh, a Sikh community leader, said, “I heard gunshots and bombs.”
At that time of the morning, we tend to have a large amount of Sikh devotees who come to pray at the gurdwara (temple complex).”
After the attack, videos taken on social media showed damaged pillars and walls of the temple’s main prayer hall, as well as debris strewn across the floor. A part of a building close to the temple was also set ablaze.
The impact of the car bomb shattered the windows of multiple residential buildings. Shattered glass scattered the nearby streets.
The area was sealed off by Taliban militants, preventing journalists from interviewing residents and witnesses.
According to a Taliban fighter stationed in the neighborhood, several Sikhs who were in the temple at the time of the attack were able to exit by a rear door.
