Gaza: A Civilization's Silence

What is truly happening in Gaza? This is the latest exhibition of destruction by those who claim to lead the civilized world. Is humanity so stripped of conscience, so impotent, that it can do nothing more than watch–mute and helpless–as tyranny reigns unchecked? Once again, Gaza bleeds. Once again, the world watches. According to recent reports by AFP and Reuters, Israeli airstrikes have intensified, claiming the lives of 146 Palestinians–many of them women and children–within just 24 hours. This surge in violence followed the collapse of a fragile ceasefire agreement in March. The carnage has triggered fears of another full-scale ground invasion, now ominously labeled Operation Gideon’s Wagons by the Israeli military. Hospitals are overwhelmed. Civilians remain buried under rubble. For the last two months, access to aid has been blocked. The United Nations and humanitarian experts have confirmed that the entire Gaza Strip is now experiencing famine conditions, with over 500,000 people facing starvation. Despite Israel lifting an 11-week blockade on May 19, 2025, and allowing limited aid through the Kerem Shalom crossing, the United Nations reported that no humanitarian aid had been distributed within Gaza as of May 21. Security concerns and the risk of looting in certain areas have hindered the delivery of essential supplies. Yet, global powers offer little more than statements of concern. Let us ask clearly, what role is the United States playing? What role are other superpowers playing? Despite abundant evidence of war crimes and collective punishment, US support for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu remains steadfast. His government has not only continued its military campaign but also announced an even more expanded and intense operation against Hamas–with the potential occupation of the entire Gaza Strip on the table. This, he declared openly on May 5. What, then, are the so-called civilized nations doing? What message do they send when their silence or complicity bolsters policies that uproot a people from their land and systematically erase their presence? Where are the so-called champions of human rights and international law? It is naïve to expect moral leadership from a superpower like the United States when its strategic interests align with the oppressor. Nevertheless, what of other global powers–Russia, the European Union, etc. Are they not equally culpable through their inaction their hedging, and their diplomatic gymnastics? None has stepped up to protect the besieged people of Palestine. Are the superpowers, in reality, not competing but colluding–dividing the world among themselves while civilians pay the price? We have been told to trust in institutions, in dialogue, in diplomacy. Yet what has decades of diplomacy yielded for the Palestinians? Displacement. Dispossession. Death. The people of Palestine are not settlers, nor invaders–they are sons and daughters of the land, and yet, with the active support of the West, their homes have been taken, their voices silenced, and their dignity crushed. A silent civilization is no civilization at all. Moreover, while superpowers weigh their options and balance their alliances, the rubble of Gaza grows, the mass graves deepen, and the cries of children echo unanswered. This is not simply about Gaza. It is about the moral center of our world–whether it exists, whether it can still guide us. If we, as a global community, cannot uphold even the most basic tenets of justice, then what legitimacy do our institutions, our governments, or our collective humanity have? Let the record show: silence in the face of oppression is complicity. In addition, history will not forget those who remained silent while Gaza burned. Only the Lord of the heavens bears full witness to every injustice. His justice, unlike that of men, will not be delayed forever.
