ISLAMABAD: The Prime Minister received a call from European Council President Antonio Costa and discussed the ongoing tensions in the Middle East as well as Pakistan-EU relations.
According to a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s House, the two leaders expressed deep concern over the ongoing tensions in Iran and the Gulf countries and their impact on the global economy and stressed the need for dialogue and diplomacy to resolve the crisis.
The Prime Minister also briefed the European Council President on the latest developments regarding Pakistan’s mediation efforts to reduce tensions in the Middle East crisis.
The European Council President, while supporting Pakistan’s peace efforts, reiterated that the European Union supports all diplomatic initiatives to restore peace and stability in the region.
Highlighting the importance of Pakistan-EU relations, the Prime Minister said that Pakistan attaches great importance to these relations. He reminded that his scheduled visit to Brussels last month was postponed.
The President of the European Council said that he looks forward to welcoming the Prime Minister to Brussels on mutually agreed dates.
Highlighting the importance of GSP Plus, the Prime Minister said that he looks forward to inaugurating the first Pakistan-EU Business Forum to be held in Islamabad on 28-29 April 2026.
The Prime Minister also expressed his best wishes to the President of the European Commission, Ms. Ursula von der Leyen.
In his statement, the President of the European Council said that he had a constructive telephone conversation with the Pakistani Prime Minister, and was also informed about the important progress made in the talks regarding the Iran war and the important meeting of the Egyptian, Saudi, Turkish and Pakistani Foreign Ministers in Islamabad.
The President of the European Council said that the European Council is deeply concerned about the impact of the Iran war on the countries of the world, and I wish Pakistan well in its peace efforts.
Only dialogue and diplomacy can restore peace and stability in the Middle East with full respect for the United Nations Charter and international law.
