China has introduced a special visa program for young professionals in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

This visa will be called the K-visa. This visa has been in effect since October 1, 2025.

This visa is for foreigners who are going to work in science and technology, research, education or related fields. The educational standard is at least a bachelor’s degree, from a recognized or accredited university or research institution.

It has an age limit of about 45 years. This visa will allow for entry, residence opportunities, educational exchanges, research, business and innovation activities. An invitation letter/guarantee from the inviting Chinese company or institution is not required.

Furthermore, there will be more flexibility in the duration of the visa, the length of stay, etc. However, the documents required for the visa application and the “standards” are currently waiting to be clarified, such as which universities will be considered accredited, what kind of work or research experience will be accepted, etc.

It is also unclear whether this visa will open the way to permanent residency or citizenship. Most likely, this visa will be temporary or for a specific period of time.
