A new study has found that patients taking weight-loss drugs like Ozempic and Vegovy may regain weight after stopping the medication.

The study, published in the journal BMC Medicine, reviewed 11 past clinical trials involving nearly 2,500 people. The review found a clear trend of patients regaining weight after the drug course ended.

At least six drugs are approved for the treatment of obesity in older adults. These drugs include orlistat, naltrexone-bupropion, semaglutide, liraglutide, tizepam and phentermine-topiramate.

In six of the 11 trials, researchers focused on semaglutide, the active ingredient in Ozempic and Vegovy.

While there is growing evidence that long-term use of anti-obesity medications can lead to significant weight loss in older adults, studies have also begun to emerge that show signs of weight gain once the medication is stopped.
