Bollywood actor Imran Khan has got a temporary victory in his legal action against the order to leave India. The Bombay High Court has stayed the notice issued by the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) till the next hearing. The next hearing of the case will be on Monday, November 2 at 3 pm.
Aamir Khan’s nephew Imran Khan is a US citizen and also holds an Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card. A division bench of the Bombay High Court comprising Chief Justice Mahesh Chandra Tripathi and Justice Advait Sethna heard the matter briefly. On this occasion, the central government’s lawyer requested the court to adjourn the hearing of the case till November 2.
Additional Solicitor General Anil Singh assured the court that no action will be taken against Imran Khan till the next hearing. The actor’s senior lawyer Venkatesh Dhond took the stand that Imran Khan was supposed to leave India the very next day under the FRRO order.
The case began on October 10 when Mumbai police detained Imran Khan near August Kranti Maidan. There, a protest was being held against the ongoing special drive to revise the voter lists, known as the Special Intensive Revision (SIR). The protesters were also demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gianish Kumar.
Along with Imran Khan, his partner Lekha Washington and cousin Zain Mary Khan were also detained. According to reports, BJP leader Kurt Soumya had complained to the police that Imran Khan was not an Indian citizen but an American citizen and action should be taken against him as per the law. Following this complaint, the police had referred the matter to the FRRO.
