Jeff Bezos, founder of Amazon and space company Blue Origin, believes that space technology will develop so much in the next two decades that millions of people will be able to live in space outside the Earth. According to him, in the future, robots will be more effective and less expensive than humans to do difficult work on the moon or other planets.

Jeff Bezos presented these ideas during a talk during Tech Week 2025 held in Italy. He said that people alive today have many reasons to be optimistic about the future, as continuous advances in technology are creating new possibilities.

According to Bezos, millions of people will be living in space in the next two decades. He said that most people will settle there because of their own will and interest, not because humans will be inevitable. If a task needs to be done on the surface of the moon or any other location, robots can be sent for it, which will prove to be much cheaper than taking humans there.

Speaking about the concerns about the elimination of jobs due to artificial intelligence and the future of human civilization, Bezos said that inventions increase the overall well-being of society. According to him, inventions like the wheel played a role in improving human life thousands of years ago and modern technology will also continue the same trend.

Bezos is not the only one who is optimistic about the possibilities of living and working in space. Sam Altman, the head of OpenAI, has predicted that young people graduating from university in the next ten years will be able to get new and attractively paid jobs in space. According to him, the jobs available to young people in the future will be more interesting than the early careers of their previous generation.

Elon Musk, the head of Tesla and SpaceX, is also in favor of plans to take humans to other planets. They believe humans could reach Mars by 2028, while SpaceX has also been discussing plans to launch unmanned rocket test flights earlier.

In a related development, Voyager Technologies founder and CEO Dylan Taylor told Fortune in August 2026 that humans living and working in space is not just a distant dream. According to him, this development could begin in the early 2030s.

All of these statements are predictions about the future by these entrepreneurs; the technology, costs, and practical arrangements required for large-scale permanent human settlement in space are still significant challenges.
