In a world already marred by widespread suffering and war, the ongoing genocide in Gaza stands out as one of the most appalling human tragedies of our time. Since the events of October 7, 2023, the Israeli regime has launched a ferocious and relentless campaign against the Palestinian people, leaving over 53,000 dead — many of them women and children. The violence has reached such staggering proportions that even Israel’s traditional Western allies, including the UK, Canada, and France, have called the situation in Gaza “intolerable.”
Under the guise of rescuing hostages and avenging past attacks, Israel is clearly pursuing a policy of ethnic cleansing, seeking to permanently reoccupy and control the Gaza Strip. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s declaration that Israel will “take control of all the territory” leaves little doubt about Tel Aviv’s intentions. The so-called peace negotiations remain fruitless, and the recent trickle of humanitarian aid — after Gaza was starved for weeks — does little to address the scale of the suffering. As one UN official aptly described it, the aid amounts to a mere “drop in the ocean.”
Shockingly, voices within the Israeli political establishment continue to advocate for the mass starvation of Gaza’s population. But Israel has failed to comprehend a fundamental truth of history: when a native population is determined to resist foreign occupation, even the most brutal campaigns of violence and displacement cannot crush their spirit. The Palestinian people have made it clear that they will not abandon their land — even in the face of genocide.
Their resistance echoes the struggles of other colonized nations that eventually forced their occupiers to retreat. However, the heroism of the Palestinian people must not allow the world to forget its own moral responsibility. The international community, particularly the United States, cannot remain silent or complicit. The US, as Israel’s chief political and military patron, wields enormous influence and must be held accountable for enabling this humanitarian catastrophe.
Former President Donald Trump, who has recently positioned himself as a global peacemaker, has a critical opportunity. Whether in reducing tensions between Pakistan and India, engaging with Russia over Ukraine, or navigating the Iran nuclear crisis, Trump has shown an interest in diplomatic resolutions. Now, Gaza must be added to that list.
If Trump truly wants to cement a legacy of peace, the most effective step he could take is to immediately suspend all military and financial aid to Israel. The world is watching. Gaza’s besieged population is waiting. History will remember those who stood for justice — and those who remained silent in the face of genocide.
