JAKARTA: According to Indonesia’s health minister on Thursday, 99 children have died this year and the country is looking into a spike in cases of acute kidney injury (AKI) that can be fatal.Media sources also reported that some of the syrups were made locally, according to Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin.

The sale of all syrup-based drugs has been temporarily outlawed in Indonesia, and authorities have been closely monitoring paracetamol syrups that have been used to treat children’s fevers and include dangerous diethylene glycol and ethylene glycol.

The government of the Gambia is also looking into infant AKI mortality connected to paracetamol syrups following 70 fatalities there. India stated that it is looking into the syrups, which were produced by Maiden Pharmaceuticals Ltd. of New Delhi.

The health minister, Budi Gunadi Sadikin, did not say how many patients’ houses contained syrups that contained ethylene glycol and diethylene glycol. The number of paediatric AKI patients in whom the components were found was not disclosed by a representative for the health ministry.Five out of the 26 syrup drugs examined contained excessive amounts of ethylene glycol.
