Two of the most popular video-sharing and gaming apps in the country, TikTok and PUBG, will reportedly be banned by the Afghan Taliban within the next three months, according to reports citing a statement from the Taliban-led communications department.
Since the organization retook power this year and outlawed music, movies, and television soaps, Afghans, who had few other options for entertainment, are big fans of the phone apps.
The announcement of the prohibition was made during a meeting with members of the security industry and the organization in charge of enforcing Sharia law. The announcement follows the Taliban in Afghanistan blocking over 23 million websites for having “immoral content.”
According to sources, the Taliban government has instructed telecommunication and internet service providers to adhere to rules within the allotted period. Since assuming control of Afghanistan on August 15 of last year, the Taliban has made commitments to women’s rights, media freedom, and formal amnesty.
The group has faced harsh worldwide backlash for breaking public promises by directing women to stay at home, prohibiting adolescent females from attending school, and limiting and criticizing mainstream and social media.
