Despite Imran Khan’s recent announcement to quit these provincial assemblies it is hard to believe what he is saying. Not just because he is prone to turn back from every U-turn he finds on the highway but also because it falls beyond the calculations of the ground realities.
Just for the sake of an argument , let’s presume , he is not playing this time and he is serious in his decision to quit the system , to quit the provincial assemblies.
More for the same sake , just presume he calls his coterie for the decision and they all decide to go by line taken by the skipper. The question is: what will happen then?
Do the resignations from the provincial assemblies mean new General Elections? The answer is a big NO.
The ECP has asserted that by-polls in the provinces against the vacant seats will be the natural outcome. It means no one should calculate for the General Elections amidst this challenge. ECP spokesperson has clarified that if the provincial assemblies were to be dissolved, elections will only be carried out on the seats of those particular assemblies rather than the National Assembly seats.
PTI hopes that resignation from these provincial assemblies shall pave the way for General Elections. This is sheer misunderstanding of the constitutional scheme. The fact is that said resignation or the dissolution of provincial assemblies cannot guarantee General Elections.
So the question is : What else PTI does expect from this adventure, especially when it is witnessing its every adventure eventually turning into a misadventure, thanks to the flawed decision making within the party?
Suppose if the resignations are accepted and by-polls held, what PTI is expected to gain from this useless exercise?
Shall it participate on its own vacated seats? Shall it opt to refrain from participating? Whether it is yes or not , the question is: what PTI expects to gain from this whole [MIS]adventure?
You resign and you contest, does it make any sense?
