Government and opposition have indulged in eight rounds of negotiations over finalizing terms of reference for the formation of judicial commission to probe revelations of Panama Papers.
Eighths meeting between the two parties held on Thursday but both sides not only failed to be on the same page but also could not finalize the date of next meeting and issue continues. Both sides are accusing each other for the failure to finalizing the terms of reference over the issue of Panama Papers. It seems government and opposition lacking sincerity to find the solution as they are firm on their stance and impasse over TORs continues.
Government is of the view that all the focus of the opposition is to just drag Prime Minister into the issue and their demand of probe lacks basic essence of proper inquiry of the matter. Indeed delay is in favor of the government the long they drag the issue there are better chances it will fade away, particularly from the media.
Opposition holds government responsible for using the delaying tactics. Opposition believes that government is trying to broaden the scope of inquiry just to give safe passage to Prime Minister and his family. It also seems that Opposition parties lack unity or clarity of thoughts in their approach that how to tackle the matter. Though they are showing in the meetings that Opposition is on the same page but delay in formalizing terms of reference is causing concerns in their unity. Pakistan Tehreek e Insaaf Chief Imran Khan has reiterated if government’s attitude remained unchanged over the issue, his party is all set to hit the roads any time soon.
We hope better sense prevails and consensus is reached on the issue.
