GOMA: In eastern DR Congo’s increasing anti-UN rallies, three United Nations peacekeepers and at least 12 protesters have died. Perceptions that MONUSCO, the UN mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, is not doing enough to halt attacks by armed groups, have fueled anger.

In Goma, the capital of North Kivu province, crowds seized a MONUSCO headquarters and supply facility on Monday. On Tuesday, the protests moved to Beni and Butembo in the north.

Seven protesters were murdered and a number of others were injured, according to Colonel Paul Ngoma, the chief of police in Butembo, who also reported that three peacekeepers — two Indians and a Moroccan — were slain there.

At least five people (were) deceased and about 50 were injured in Goma, according to a tweet from government spokesman Patrick Muyaya. In order to avert attacks on UN employees, the security forces had fired “warning bullets” at the protesters, he claimed.
