The 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), which begins today (Tuesday), is being attended by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. This is the first in-person session of the UNGA since 2019 when all discussions were held virtually owing to the epidemic.
PM Shehbaz Sharif announced on Twitter that he had just arrived in New York and that he was there “to share Pakistan’s narrative to the world.”I will explain Pakistan’s position on matters that demand the world’s immediate attention in my speech at the UNGA and in bilateral meetings, “the president penned.
The premier was greeted by top officers, including the ambassador to Washington of Pakistan, Masood Khan, and Pakistan’s permanent representative to the UN, Munir Akram, upon his arrival at the John F. Kennedy International Airport today.
The Foreign Office spokesperson said that PM Shehbaz Sharif will speak at the UNGA session on September 23. The emphasis of his speech will be on the problems faced by Pakistan in the wake of the recent disastrous floods caused by climate change in the nation.
Along with other senior officials, the prime minister is travelling with Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Hina Rabbani Khar, Defense Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif, and Information Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb.
Support from ADB:
Shortly after the Pakistani prime minister arrived in New York, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) released a statement expressing its solidarity with Pakistan and pledging to act “immediately to deliver a large package of assistance and rehabilitation.”
The rescue package, according to the ADB, is intended to support people, livelihoods, and infrastructure both now and in the future.
