US Vice President Kamala Harris urged top female Democrats on Friday to continue fighting for reproductive rights and stressed the importance of electing two more Democratic senators in the upcoming midterm elections.
At the Democratic National Committee’s Women’s Leadership Forum on Friday in Washington, Harris said, “If there were ever any cause for this group to exist in recent memory, the moment is now.”
During a panel discussion led by actress Priyanka Chopra, she remarked, “We have got to do everything we can in the next 39 days to remind people what is at risk in these elections.”Chopra poked fun at guys patronizing ladies at the beginning of the session. She made a joke about the eerie silence in the space “Do you recognize that noise? Ladies, it is the sound of no mansplaining.”
President Joe Biden promised earlier this month that Democrats would legislate the right to abortion if two additional Democratic senators were elected to the US Senate in the November 8 midterm elections. He claimed that this would allow for the removal of the filibuster, a legislative roadblock that needs a 60-vote majority to be removed.
Abortion has been restricted, prohibited, or sought to be prohibited in over half of the states. Republicans have suggested a countrywide ban on abortions after 15 weeks or during the second trimester of pregnancy, including Senator Lindsey Graham earlier this month.
