Donald Trump has been inaugurated as the 45th President of the United States of America. At 70 years of age, Trump is the oldest man ever to begin work in the Oval Office. Many experts and political pundits in US were predicting an easy win for Hillary Clinton but Donald Trump’s victory in Presidential elections in November 2016 surprised many.
Thousands of people around the world including US are protesting against newly inaugurated President. Hundreds of thousands of people poured into the US capital on Saturday to march in opposition to President Donald Trump, similar demonstrations took place in cities across Africa, Asia and Europe. Women and men of all ages took to the streets of Washington, DC, rallying around issues like women’s rights, reproductive rights and immigration. More than half a million people also took to the streets of Los Angeles, according to police there, and a similar number gathered in New York. Other marches took place in Chicago, Dallas, San Francisco, Denver, St Louis and elsewhere. Protesters were of the view that Donald Trump has put forward hate and division as politics and they are united against it. Police fired gas to disperse protesters after stones were thrown and windows broken in Washington on Friday ahead of Donald Trump’s presidential inauguration.
Donald Trump in his very first address vowed to battle against radical Islamic terrorism and said that destroying the militant threats would be heart of his foreign policy. At the moment it is speculated that what policies Donald Trump would opt for South Asian region and particularly towards relations with Pakistan.
But there are some of his statements regarding Pakistan from which idea can be drawn about his future policies regarding Pakistan. During his Presidential campaign Donald Trump took hard stance on Pakistan as he on social networking site twitter asked Pakistan to apologize for hiding the arch nemesis of the US. He has also shown concerns over nuclear program of Pakistan besides questioning hefty sums in US aid to Pakistan. He did not directly mentioned Pakistan but in his inauguration speech he expresses his concerns for sending billions as aid to other countries. But in the past Trump has been quoted demanding the release of Dr. ShakeelAfridi and he linked it with the US aid to Pakistan.
In his very first speech after becoming President of US, Donald Trump raised the slogan of ‘America First’ and said all his policies would be aimed at saving interest of US. It is obvious that in international relations securing self- interest is the main objective. Pakistan, in a bid to get its interests in mediation over the line, will need to accede to Trump’s demands as well. Pakistan has accelerated diplomatic efforts to attract maximum international attention for its entry into the Nuclear Suppliers group and water disputes with India. At this time Pakistan needs to explore new ways to get nod of US in its favour on multiple diplomatic battlefronts with India. Now only time will tell that how successful policy makers in Pakistan would be to secure maximum interest of Pakistan in relations with US.
