ISLAMABAD: Former President and co-chairman Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Asif Ali Zardari has condoled the death of Shaikh Atiq Ahmed who passed away in the early hours of Friday in Lahore.
Shaikh Atiq Ahmed was the elder son of former PPP Secretary General PPP Shaikh Rafiq Ahmed. During dictatorship a time came when Shaikh Rafiq Ahmed and both of his sons were in prison. Shaikh Atiq Ahmed was a student leader in Government College Lahore and took active part in the struggle against Gen. Ziaul Haq dictatorship. He was imprisoned and tortured by his regime resulting in his psychological disorder which he had to live with all his life. He spent some time in exile as well. Unfortunately both his legs were also amputated due to blood sugar. He was under medical treatment for the last three decades.
The Former President in a condolence message said that he was shocked and grieved by the news of death of Shaikh Atiq Ahmed. He will be remembered by PPP leaders and workers alike for a long time for his sacrifices for the party and democratic struggle. He also prayed for eternal peace to the departed soul and strength and fortitude to family and friends to bear this irreparable loss.
