Now the President plays “comedy of errors”
Asif Mahmood
Following the comic tradition of ruling coterie of the semi illiterate societies , after CMs and the Prime Minister, this time it is the President of Pakistan who has “ taken notice” of the murder of assistant professor of Karachi University mass communication department, Dr. Syed Waheed ur Rehman .
When asked, the legal fraternity said taking notice of a cognizable offence by the Prime Minister or the Head of the state is nothing but a tool to gain popularity. The legal system provides no such gimmick of taking such notices. As per law whenever a cognizable offence is committed, the police is bound to register first information report and once the report is registered the process of investigation starts automatically irrespective of the fact whether some top gun has “ taken notice” or not.
It is an unfortunate tradition that rulers never pay attention to reform and strengthen the institution. Rather they take comic measures to gain popularity. One only wonders how many such notices the ruler have already taken sans any productive outcome. Only if the notices taken by the CM Punjab and the Prime Minister were not enough the President has now taken up this crusade of taking the notices. Sanity must prevail. Many people are murdered daily in Pakistan so the question stirs; how many notices the President will have to take to put the ASI’s in action? Do we really need a notice taken by none other than the President of Pakistan to move an SHO to the crime scene? Is this the way to steer the country out of the woods? Is it a fiefdom or a democratic society we are living in? If it is a democratic society it must be governed by the law and not by the notices of His Excellencies.
