It seems that political parties of opposition have settled their differences and once again are ready to take the issue of investigation of revelations of Panama Papers to the next level. Opposition parties PTI, PPP and PAT had filed a reference with the Election Commission seeking Prime Minister’s disqualification under Articles 62 and 63 for concealing his foreign assets in his nomination forms. Opposition maintained that prime minister himself, and his family members in parliament have falsely stated their assets to the ECP in their mandatory filings.
All the political parties are united in their views that this time around they would not show flexibility of any sort on terms of reference for Panama leaks probe and government needs to alter its position in order to break the impasse on the issue. After holding internal meeting on Panama leaks ToRs, opposition leaders reiterated that they have shown flexibility to soften the conditions of probe and it is government’s turn to show intentions to break the deadlock over the issue. In short, it seems that opposition is firm and not going to budge an inch from their stand of initiating the probe from prime minister’s family.
In recent times, during public speeches prime minister has presented himself for accountability, but his ToRs negotiating team heads are not willing to let his wish fulfilled. Government needs to understand that prime minister after taking clean chit from investigation team would be in better moral position to rule the country for remaining two years. On the other side, if despite the inclusion of Nawaz Sharif and his family members in the Panama leaks, they would keep using delaying tactics over probe, this act could haunt them in next general elections.
Govt needs to show flexibility in order to break the impasse on Panama Papers probe.
